E-bikes must:

• Have two or three wheels, a seat (saddle) and fully operable pedals
• Have an electric motor of 750 watts or less
• Meet one of the following class definitions:
  • Class 1: Pedal assist only, up to 20 mph
  • Class 2: Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph
  • Class 3: Pedal assist only, up to 28 mph
• Not be modified to exceed their labeled class or speed capability
• Be operated only by riders age 15 or older

Safety reminders:

• Use safe speeds, especially on curves, hills and areas with limited visibility
• Yield to pedestrians and slower trail users, particularly in crosswalks and shared spaces
• Pass on the left and provide an audible signal before passing
• Wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear

Storage and battery safety:

• Store e-bikes in a cool, dry place away from humidity
• Do not store e-bikes in fire escape routes or block exits
• Dispose of batteries properly at designated recycling or hazardous waste facilities
• Never place e-bike batteries in regular garbage or recycling bins

• A person under the age of 15 must not operate an electric-assisted bicycle (e-bike) (MN State Statute 169.222)

• Operation of motorcycle, motor scooter, motor bike (MN State Statute 169.974)
• Slow down when approaching intersections with stop signs and proceed without stopping if no vehicle or pedestrian is present (MN State Statute 169.222)
• Stop at all stoplights (MN State Statutes 169.06 and 169.222)
• Travel with the flow of traffic, unless otherwise signed (MN State Statutes 169.18 and 169.222)
• Use a light when riding at night (MN State Statute 169.222)
• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks (MN State Statute 169.21)
• E-motos that are not registered & insured for roadway use are then classified as off-highway motorcycles. Operation requirements: (MN Statute Section 84.795)
• Parents or owners who knowingly allow a dependent to operate an e-moto in violation of applicable age or legal restrictions may be held liable and subject to applicable citations.
• No person may operate a motorized foot scooter upon a sidewalk, except when necessary to enter or leave adjacent property (MN State Statute Section 169.225)
