Plymouth Parks & Recreation prides itself on providing quality programs and activities for people of all abilities. To create the best recreation experience for people with and without disabilities, we require a minimum of two weeks' advance notice before the start of a recreation program or activity.

Without a two-week notice, Plymouth Parks & Recreation cannot guarantee that individual requests can be met. If Plymouth Parks & Recreation cannot meet a given request due to short notice, the participant would be required to arrange for their own personal care attendant (PCA). No refund will be issued due to the lack of inclusion staff if you register less than one week from the start of the program.

How do I request reasonable accommodations/1-on-1 assistance?

What happens after I request support?

1. Staff will contact you to discuss the accommodations and participant’s needs
2. Staff will be assigned to work with the participant.
3. The Accessibility & Inclusion Supervisor will provide an accommodation plan for the staff member working with the participant.

Can I bring my own/my child’s personal care attendant (PCA)?

Yes, participants are welcome to attend programs with a PCA. The PCA is not required to pay the class fee. Please contact Paul Pearson, Accessibility & Inclusion Supervisor at 763-509-5228 or ppearson@plymouthmn.gov so the appropriate recreation staff can be notified they will be attending.

What if I don’t need 1-on-1 support but would have medical, allergy, behavioral or other needs?

What is adaptive recreation?

Activities specifically modified or designed for people with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities. Adjustments can be made to equipment, rules and instruction methods to remove barriers allowing people of all abilities to participate.

What does sensory-friendly mean?

Individuals with sensory processing disorder or sensory sensitivities struggle to receive, organize and respond appropriately to information from the senses. Individuals may find noises, smells, lights and even crowds not only overwhelming from a sensory perspective but also sometimes physically painful. Sensory-friendly means adapting the environment to better accommodate people with sensory sensitivities which could include dimmer lighting, reduced/no noise, calming spaces and more.

The KUBE indoor playground is reserved for our friends with sensory needs. Smaller capacities will be observed, and sensory considerations include no overhead announcements, dimmed lights, and no music played on overhead speakers. Sensory Room and bags available. This is a no cost event thanks to the generous sponsorship of Anna Elder Homes.

Our quarterly parties honor children in a welcoming and inclusive environment specifically for neurodiverse children. Kids will enjoy free play in the K.U.B.E indoor playground, pizza, treats, and activities designed to be accessible for a variety of abilities and sensory needs. Most importantly, this celebration is about making every child feel seen, valued, and celebrated for who they are. Families and guests are welcome to join us as we share smiles, laughter, and birthday cheer! There is no cost to attend but please register your child(ren) 3 and over. Can Play Adapted Sports is an organization where the belief is every individual deserves the opportunity to participate in recreational activities that promote health, happiness, and community connection.

It’s not just about playing games; it’s about building friendships, enhancing physical fitness, and creating a sense of belonging. We have partnered with Can Play to bring adaptive soccer, basketball, floor hockey, flag football and more to Plymouth.

Hold Your Horses offers equine assisted services in a private farm setting located in Greenfield (20 minutes west of Plymouth). They are dedicated to providing effective interventions that help clients achieve wellness and increase quality of life. Year-round services are available with heated indoor and scenic outdoor facilities. A professional therapy team and trained equine partners provide occupational therapy and mental health services to people across their lifespan. We have partnered with them this summer to offer Partners in the Pasture- camps for youth with disabilities and senior citizens.

Roots and Wings is dedicated to providing collaborative therapeutic support that empowers individuals to thrive in the spaces, activities, and communities most meaningful to them. We work with them to offer inclusive nature and arts-based summer camps designed to foster connection, confidence, and growth for all ages.

Young Athletes is an innovative sports play program that introduces children aged 2-7 years old with and without intellectual disabilities to the world of sports. There is no better way to introduce children to the Special Olympics community than through Young Athletes, fostering inclusion in a fun and engaging setting for all! Offering recreation sports for ages 7-12 can support fitness and social opportunities with activities that appeal and cater directly to the interest of its athletes. Opportunities this summer include backyard games, flag football and tennis.

Private and small group (2-3 participants) lessons are taught by an instructor certified in Swim Angelfish’s Swim Whisperers® program. This multi-level Swim Whisperers® Certification Program teaches swim instructors the strategies needed to overcome the underlying challenges faced by their swimmers. This advanced adaptive aquatic training empowers instructors with the required tools to more effectively teach swimmers with anxiety, autism, trauma, discomfort, physical difficulties, sensory issues, motor problems and delays.

Adaptive Stars Gymnastics Camp

Adaptive Stars is a supportive gymnastics program designed for children with differing abilities. The class focuses on building strength, coordination, balance, and confidence through fun, age-appropriate activities. Coaches provide individualized guidance and adaptive equipment as needed, ensuring every child can participate safely and enjoyably while developing a love for movement and gymnastics.

Reach offers a variety of recreation programs specifically adapted to meet the needs of people with developmental disabilities. The programs are designed to promote physical health, gain confidence, enhance team building skills and to have fun! The Reach for Resources adaptive recreation programs are a cooperative effort with the City of Plymouth, meaning Plymouth residents pay a discounted resident fee. Registration is done through the Reach office and programs take place at the Plymouth Community Center and other member cities’ facilities.

Project SOAR

Project SOAR is a Community Education program that provides social enrichment and recreational programming for adults with developmental, sensory, cognitive and physical disabilities. When the Plymouth Community Center opened the new Active Wing in 2022, it became the first community center in Minnesota to be certified by KultureCity as a Sensory Inclusive® facility, as well as the third overall facility in the state to receive the certification. The certification ensures the facility and staff can properly accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities, such as autism, PTSD, or dementia.

Plymouth Parks and Recreation will be working with SRF Consulting this summer and fall to update the Americans with Disabilities Act Self Evaluation and Transition Plan related to the parks system and recreation programming.

The work will include a comprehensive accessibility audit of 58 developed parks including the Plymouth History Center with approximately 47 miles of trail within park boundaries. The final document will identify barriers, recommended solutions and establish a schedule for removal/correction.
