Rockford Road, I-494 interchange work set to begin next week

Post Date:05/16/2019 4:48 pm

A project to replace the Rockford Road (County Road 9) bridge over I-494 and improve the interchange is set to begin next week. Plymouth City Council awarded the contract for the project at its May 14 council meeting.

The project will improve traffic flow and increase the capacity of the interchange. In addition to replacement of the bridge, the project includes:

  • A wider bridge with dual, dedicated left turn lanes onto I-494
  • Wider ramps with improved turn lanes onto Rockford Road
  • Improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists

Construction Activity Begins May 21
Motorists will see construction activity beginning Tuesday, May 21. The contractor will install advance warning and traffic control signage in the area.

The first phase of the project will involve the closure of both north ramps (the ramp from County Road 9 to northbound I-494 and the ramp from southbound I-494 to County Road 9). The bridge will be open to traffic during this phase.

Stay Tuned for Timing
The contractor is finalizing plans for project phasing – more information about the schedule/timing is expected to be available late next week. All dates are weather dependent and subject to change.
