The Plymouth Police Department has made it easier for people to get their hands on a simple, yet effective tool that provides life-saving information to emergency responders. It’s called the File of Life, and it gives emergency responders critical information when victims are unable to speak for themselves.

Plymouth residents are encouraged to pick up a File of Life card and holder for each member of their household. They are available for free at the Plymouth Police Department, 3400 Plymouth Blvd. (adjacent to Plymouth City Hall) during regular business hours. Regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. 

The File of Life information card comes with a magnetic holder that can be placed on the refrigerator to make the information easily accessible to emergency responders. There is also a small sticker to place on the door of the home. Emergency responders are trained to look for these stickers so they know they can find critical information in the File of Life.
 
Medical history, allergies, insurance and emergency contact information are all included on the card. This helps paramedics, police officers and hospital personnel provide the most appropriate treatment in the timeliest manner.
 
“There are times when the person needing emergency care cannot speak for themselves,” said Community Relations Officer Jim Long. “Sometimes the person in need of emergency help might even be the caretaker of a small child or an older adult with dementia. Information in the File of Life would let responders know who to contact to provide care for those vulnerable individuals in the regular caregiver’s absence.” Long said.
