Because of initial training requirements, time commitment for first-year firefighters is considerable and typically equals 60-80 hours per month, including training and calls. Training is provided by the West Suburban Fire Academy program. View the academy schedule outline to gauge time commitment and availability.
After completing the first year, firefighters work an average of 10-15 hours per week – responding to fire calls, working Duty Crew shifts, performing maintenance activities and attending training sessions.
Each firefighter is responsible for attending 30 percent of his/her district’s calls and general alarms, measured on a quarterly basis. All members hired after July 1, 2006 must participate in the Duty Crew program and work scheduled shifts totaling at least six hours per month.
