Engine 11Process Overview
The hiring process for new firefighter recruits is comprehensive and takes several months to complete. For the 2016 hiring process, applications are accepted between Monday, June 6 and noon Friday, July 15.

Applicants are screened and interviewed and references are checked. Applicants then complete a Firefighter Physical Ability Test, attend a mandatory firefighter commitment meeting and complete a background investigation.

Once conditional offers are extended, successful candidates undergo pre-employment examinations including medical and drug screenings. Recruits who pass pre-employment examinations then begin orientation and training.

The 2016 hiring process timeline is below. Interested candidates should plan availability accordingly.

Monday, June 6
to noon Friday, July 15

Application period and copy of current driving record due.

7 p.m. Monday, July 11

Firefighter Recruitment Open House at Fire Station III (3300 Dunkirk Ln.). Attendance is strongly encouraged.

Week of July 27 

Interviews at Fire Station III.

6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9

Physical ability test at Fire Station III.

7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22

Firefighter Commitment and Expectation Meeting at Fire Station III. Attendance is mandatory.


Background investigation.


Conditional offer extended.


Pre-employment physical exam.


Medical exam and drug screen.

9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5

Recruit orientation at Fire Station II (12000 Old Rockford Rd.).

Late January/Early February 2017

Firefighter I class begins at Fire Station III.
