Summer Swim Lessons, Lifeguarding Classes Available

Summer is the perfect time to become more safe and comfortable around water. The City of Plymouth offers swim lessons and lifeguarding classes throughout the summer.

Plymouth Swim Lessons
Swimming lessons in PlymouthWayzata East Middle School, 12000 Ridgemount Ave.

Twice-a-Week Evening Lessons
These classes meet twice per week during the evening. Sessions available:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, July 17-Aug. 9
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 18-Aug. 10

Semi-Private Lessons
These classes have a smaller student-to-instructor ratio and meet five days per week. Sessions available:

  • Monday-Friday, July 17-28
  • Monday-Friday, July 31-Aug. 11

Daytime Lessons
These classes meet during the day, five days per week. Sessions available:

  • Monday-Friday, July 17-28
  • Monday-Friday, July 31-Aug. 11

Lifeguarding Pool & Waterfront
Wazyata East Middle School, 12000 Ridgemount Ave.

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid, and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer. This is a blended-learning class that combines online, classroom and pool time learning. The online portion is due prior to the first class (and requires an additional fee of $35, paid to the Red Cross). Optional Waterfront Module.

Prerequisite: The online assessment must be completed by the first day. Participants must be 15 years of age by the last day of class and demonstrate the following skills:

  1. Swim 550 yards demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.    
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, hands placed under armpits.
  3. Swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to surface and swim 20 yards back to start within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  4. Swim 5 yards and submerge and retrieve three diving rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water and return to start.

Pool & First Aid with CPR/AED – Course #24803-D1
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31-Aug. 9, $140. This class meets Monday-Friday.

Waterfront Module – Course #24804-D1
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Aug. 10-11, $30
Must take Pool & First Aid course to take Waterfront Module – additional certification for open-water areas.
